Summer Family Eats in Toronto

Summer vacation. I love being able to head out of town with the kids but heading across town to grab a bite in the city can be fun too. If you are looking for some summer dining options with the family try one of these spots.

South Street Burger

If the kids are bugging for burgers, forget those fast food joints. South Street Burger promises ‘better burgers’ made fresh to order using beef from small co-op farms that operate responsibly and consciously.  That means no antibiotics or hormones are used. Add your personal touch with the collection of toppings. Recently they’ve launched their Signature Burgers of which The Hawaiian is my favourite. How can you argue with a burger topped with grilled pineapple, bacon and hot pepper relish. Partner that with New York Fries and you’ll be full.

Summerlicious

We love exposing the kids to new food and dining experiences whether we’re traveling or hanging at home. Summerlicious, which runs from July 5 to 21, gives you the chance to try some of the city’s best restaurants. Enjoy a $15 Indian-inspired lunch at Amaya’s Bread Bar, a $35 Canadian dinner at Mildred’s Temple Kitchen or lunch and dinner menues at any of the 195 other restaurants participating in Summerlicious this year. The three-course prix fixe menues make dining out at some of the restaurants on your wish list affordable with the kids in tow.

Drake Lobster Fest Sundays

So you can’t make it to the coast for a delicious lobster dish? Drake brigs the coast to you. From July 28 until August 25, take yourself up to the Drake’s Sky Yard for Lobster Fest. For the fixed price of $34.95, enjoy a one-pound lobster, six sides (including Cuban corn, smoked potato salad, coleslaw, jalapeño cornbread, hot butter and an impossible-to-resist flourless chocolate cake trifle), plus a bottle of Keith’s. Bibs and lobster crackers are even provided. Of course the kids won’t be drinking the Keith’s but with the new boozeless menu they can enjoy some fun drinks. Actually I might opt for one of these drinks myself.

Sweet Snow Shaved Ice
Sweet! Hawaiian shaved ice has arrived in Toronto. This was one of our favourite treats on the Hawaiian beach in Waikiki. Made with all-natural sweeteners and fruity flavours such as guava, papaya or one of their signature blends, like my choice, the Hawaiian with pineapple, coconut, and banana. The tricky part will be trying to pin down this food truck. I think I’ll be stalking their twitter feed.

So even if we can’t get out of the city this summer, the kids and I will sure have pretty full bellies with stops like these planned.
